A CONSTABLE "HUSTLED."

DISGRACEFUL SCENE AT

MARTON

[press association.]

MARTON, July 29. There was a strong outburst of feeling at Marton on Saturday night between, ten o!clock and midnight, when a crowd numbering' about 200 hooted Constable Fitzjpatrick for his action m a recent-licensing 6ase at the Marton Court. ~ ' : , A great noise was kept up, and stones and eggs thrown about. Several windows were broken at the police-station, which was at the time occupied only by Constable Fitzpatrick's wife, who was naturally much alarmed. Two local residents^ who endeavoured to reason with the mob, were hustled and quickly silenced. Constable Fitzpatriek was shouldered out of the way several times, but did not get alarmed. Much credit is given the constable for his self-restraint and plucky bearing in what amounted almost/to a riot.

Captain Edwin wired at 1.10 p.m. as follows: '" Easterly moderate to strong winds; glass fall; tides high; sea heavy." Several properties,, including Mir Botham's well-known farm at TuaMarina, the lease of a milk farm at Okaramio, and the triangular'building section opposite Dr Bennett's surgery, Maxwell Road, were offered at auction on Saturday. The reserves in each case, however, proved to be higher than the public cared to bid. A Press Association- telegram from Wairoa states that, in order to encourage the Volunteer and school cadet movement, Mr John Hunter-Brown, of Whakaki, has given £200, to be invested for all time, and the interest ■devoted to cash prizes for shooting competitions among the Huranua Mounted Rifles and the Wairoa School Cadets. • Bookings for the Town Hall at date include the, following:—Perry's Biorama, to-night and to-morrow; Hinekoa Hockey social, August 14th; Major Perry's Biorama < (Salvation Army), August 22nd to 26th; Miss Jessie McLachlan's Concert Company, August 27th; Pollard's Opera Company, September 24, 25, and 26; Deveraux Dramatic Company, race nights; Catholic Entertainment Committee (pencilling), night of People's Day,. A. and P. Show; Hamilton's "Human Hearts" Dramatic Company, DecemIjßi- 20, 21 and 23. To give some idea of the force of the fgale (says the Greymouth Star of recent date) the roof of the back portion of Mr Garth's residence in Tainui Street "was lifted clean over the Masonic Hall and deposited on the verandah of Mrs Ziegler's house, knocking over a tree on its journey. The gale which blew with such fury on Saturday Sunday evidently had a down on the police force (continues the Star). First Detective Campbell was evicted from his home; and had to seek fresh quarters, and then; Sergeant Egan had j the roof I#k;on;islJhis him© and had to ; convey MS-wife ..andi family to the. station";for protection* I
