MARLBOROUGH BRIDGES.

REPLIES TO THE DEPUTATION

[Special to Expbess.] WELLINGTON, July 29. A strong deputation from Marlborough, introduced by the Hon. Mr Mills waited on the Hon. Mr McGowan, Acting-Minister for Public Works, and urged the construction ot the Wairau bridge. The speakers traversed ao length P^yious correspondence with the Hon. Mr HalWones in the matter, and asked for a pound for pound subsidy up to £6000, which the bridge is estimated to cost. Mr McGowan said he could not commit the Government in regard to any promise, but would lay the position be* tore the. Cabinet. '**, The deputation also asked that the grant for a foot-bridge over theOmaka River near itemvicktown be increased from £250 to £500, and that the vote for the Nelson Street bridge (estimated to cost £1800) be increased to £500. The Minister said the matters would receive full consideration, though any allocations made would be entirely dependent upon the amount available^ for | the Public Works Estimates. '
