Eeturns have been made up showing the population of the principal towns of the. colony, with such suburbi as may be properly counted as part of each town. They show as follows : — 1891. 1886. Auckland .. 52,432 .. 57,048' Wellington ..33,138 .. 27,833 Dunedin ..- 45,829 .. 45,518 Christchurch ..(Incomplete) 44,688 Invercargill ... 7,999 .. 8,939 Napier .. .* 8,435 .. 7,680 Nelson .. .. 6,675 .. 7,315 ~ As usual, a feature of the urban returns^ is that m all the above-named cases, except that of Napier, the females are m excess Qf the males— in Dunedin by as much ac 2245.
