Wellington, This Day. At the Supreme Cojiirt Jessie Thompson, for assault, and Benry Ferris, for larceny, were each sentenced to six months.

The Court adjourned nntil Monday nest, when the charge against Whitelaw, the late Superintendent of the Wellington Lunatio Asylum, for ill treating patients will be taken.

Thames, This Day. An inquest was held on the bodj of the boy named Buckley, who was shot at a rifle gallery a few days ago, and who|died yesterday. The affair has caused a great sensation here, and the owner of the gallery was severely censured on the matter. The boy was looking on at the firing, when the proprietor, a colored man named Clements, playfully pointed a gun— an American pea rifle— at him, and the hammer of the weapon being defective, it went off, shooting the boy m the left breast. Blood immediately spurted out, and the little fellow was conveyed to the hospital. Several attempts were made to extract the bullet, which was only the size of a pea, but without success. The post mortem examination revealed the fact that it had passed through the left lung, and the doctors think that it lodged m the muscles of the back. The jury returned a verdict of " Accidental death," with a rider deprecating the use of such weapons m public places.

Chrirtchurch, July 5. The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Union Insurance Company was held at noon to-day. The balance sheet and report were read, showing a profit of £25,200 on the year's business, and recommending a dividend of ten per cent, leaving £12,500 to be carried to the reserve fund, and £5,200 to be carried forward to next year. The chairman, m moving the adoption of the report said the business of the Company showed an increase during the past year of £13,400 over that of the previous year. The report and balance sheet wns unanimously adopted. A resolution was carried, authorising the directors to declare interim dividends m future. Mr L. E. Nathan called attention to the desirability of the Company, separately or m conjunction with other New Zealand companies establishing a branch office m England. The ohairman promised the directors he would carefully consider the matter.

This Day. £1,700 has so far been collected for the families of the Revs. Armitage and Richardson, and more is yet to come. Several cases of measles have appeared amongst children attending the Roman Catholic school at Lyttelton, and they, have led to the dosing of the school for a fortnight.

Don'edin, This Day. The petitioners m Moritzon's case hava been informed that the Governor cannot consider the petition so long as the case is before the Supreme Court, but when the charges are dealt with the petition will be considered. The good accounts fram the Cape Diamond fields here induced six of the Dunedin police force to send m their resignations. The Committee have decided upon keeping the Exhibition open two days next week, the gross proceeds to go to local charities.

Auckland, This Day. The Railway line through from Auckland to Hellensville will be opened on the 18th. John Oluf Paterson, of Mangawai was drowned by falling into the water while m an epileptic fit.

A man namedJJohn Vaughan James died suddenly.

At the Reception Committee meeting it was resolved, if possible, to get the Boyal Princes to visit the Hot Lakes.

Nelson, This Day. At the inquest on the fire at Jago's house, the Jury returned a verdict that it was accidenfy burned. It was sought to be shown that a case of jewellery insured m the Liverpool and London office for £100 had not been burnt and Jago and bis son both agreed th.it. the heat was not sufficient to destroy jewellery, but both swore to not having been able to find them or any trace of them since the fire.
