FIGHTING AT TIMOR. EIGHT PORTUGUESE KILLED. 6T ELECTRIC TELEGRAm. COPYRIGHT PEE UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION Received January 25, 10 30 am THURSDAY ISLAND, Jan.' 25. The steamer Empire, from Timor (an island in the Malay Archipelago), reports that the natives are in rebellion. Eight Portuguese residents were killed in the fighting, which proceeded for over a week. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The Empire brought official messages for transmission to Macao (a Portuguese town at the entrance to the Canton river) asking for the assistance of 300 troops and a cruiser.
