Accidents, Fires Offences, etc.

' (UNITED press association.) . Auckland, Jan 5. The residence of Mr "Vincent, at Hamilton, was burned to-day. It was iueured for £IOO, By a fire in the cabinetmaker’s shop of Walter Bayne, Newton, the contents were destroyed. They were insured for £IOO in the Royal. William Smith Ferguson, a medical man, but working at Mangawai as a gumdigger, was a victim to a murderous assault, and lies in a critical condition. A man named Pryce has been arrested on suspicion, J. S. Gibbons has been committed for trial at the Supreme Court Criminal Sessions; which open on Monday next, on a charge of setting fire to a sawmill at Onehunga, with intent to defraud the Union Insurance Co. The defence was reserved. Bail was allowed in prisoner’s own bond for £3OO, and two sureties of £l5O each. Wellington Jan. 5. A roan named James M'Donnell dropped dead in a paddock at Taratahi while trying to catch a horse. Christchurch, Jan 5. This morning Arthur T, Pillow, 2-4, years, waß drowned at New Brighton He went to bathe with his two brothers and brother-in-law, T. Toneycliffe. The tide took them out seaward. Toneycliffe got Arthur in, and lef him standing in I three feet of water, while ne went out to help the others, A wave lifted deceased off his feet, and Bwept him out, and lie was drowned.
