CORONATION OF QUEEN Conclusion of Carnival The Public Hall at Waharoa was filled to capacity on' Thursday evening- on the occasion of the Coronation ceremony, following the recent-ly-concluded Queen Carnival. The procession of the competing queens and their respective retinues was a colourful scene. This was led by-; Miss Betty Barker (Green Queen),, whose attendants were ' Misses ■G, Walker and N. Barker as ladies-th-/ waiting, and Dale Farley and Mavis Cresswell as pages. Next came Miss Chrissie Smith (Gold Queen), who was supported by Misses Glennis Orr and Ngaire Keeley, and little Audrey White and Master Desmond Orr. The queen-elect, Miss Lois Ryan (Blue Queen) then entered the hall, attended by Misses Helen Roach, Eileen Casey, Joan McCarthy and Edna Williams as ladies-in-waiting, and Colleen and Maureen Casey. The Green and Gold Queens had taken up positions at each side of the stage, which had been arranged in the form of a throne-room, and covered in regal colourings, and the queen-elect was escorted by the Lord Chancellor (Mr. J. Pohlen) and the Lord Chamberlain (Mr. W. P. Ryan) to the raised dais and throne. The following assisted in the ceremoney: Trumpeters, Masters Russell iWathen and Bertie Burns; herald, -Miss May dagger; mistress of the robes, Miss M. Hill; swordbearer, Mr. T. Brown; sceptre bearer, Mr. R, W. Burns; crown bearer, Miss Ethel Barker; orb, bearer, Miss Grace Johnson.

Following the reading of the proclamation by the Lord Chancellorsetting out the victory of Queen Lois over her rivals, Princess Betty of “ Butter of Anchor Fame ” and Princess Chrissie of the “ Golden Cornfields,” the crowning ceremony was completed and fealty sworn' by the principals of the State. The Queen then delivered a speech from her position upon the Throne.

The following / persons were nexl -presented to Queen Lois:—Mr. and Mrs. R. Orr (Duke and Duchess oi Mbwbray); Mr. T. Walker and Mrs. C. Cresswell (Duke and Duchess of Wheelbarrow Derby); Mr. N: Maclean and Mrs. A. Jagger (Duke and Duchess of Pots and-Pans); Mr.-and Mrs. 0. L. Lasenby (Duke and -Duchess of .Ward Street); •• Mry* J. Barrett and Mrs. W. Farley (Duke and Duchess of Wardville); Mr. G. L. Whyte (Nabob -of a Thousand Wives). • ' Subsequently the Queen decorated the following for outstanding services to the State: —Mrs. J. Doleman (Lady of the Shaving Brush); Mrs. E. Casey (Lady of the Spondulix), Mrs. D. R. Gunn (Lady Robina and Order of the W. 1.), Mrs. R. L. Scott (Lady of the Bath Salts), Mrs, W. Farley (Lady of the Egg Collection), Mrs. G. T. Newsome (Dame of the Coffee Pot), Mrs. J. S. Dickey (Lady of the Cream Puffs), Miss Loina McGahan (Lady of the House Parties), Mr. J., H. Doleman (Order of the Shaving Brush), Mr. J. S. Dickey (Lord Grand Usher), Mr. W. DUnlop (Order of Agriculture), Mr. J. Orr (Order of fhe Greasy. Pig), Mr. JV W. Townes (Baron Ready Cash and Health Stamps), Mr. C. H. Cresswell (Night of the Pen and Nib), Mr. J. Barrett (Duke of Wardville), Mr. A. H. Baskeville (Lord Promoter of Entertainment and Order of the Bath).

Presents were handed to the candidates in the recent carnival by Mr. 0, Lasenby, on behalf of the Public Hall Committee. The speaker thanked fhem for their assistance and paid a tribute to the harmonious manner in which the contest had been carried to such a successful conclusion. The residents of the district were also thanked for their support of the campaign, and asked to hand to the hall trustees any suggestions of improvements which might be considered necessary in connection with the building and the facilities pro-' vided. Those present were entertained at supper at the close of the > coronation proceedings by the Hall Committee. 1 The whole evening was a most colourful one, and in the opinion oi those who have been present at other similar ceremonies in; other districts, was one of the best of its kind they had ever attended.
