A WIN FOR MATAMATA

Somers Cup Brought Back

The Matamata Polo Club’s team visited Morrinsville on Saturday and was successful by 11 goals to 3 in its challenge for the Somers Cup. The teams were as follows: — Morrinsville (holders): P. Swarbrick (captain), T. Mellow, R- Douglas, W. Gaddes. Matamata (challengers): J. Elliot, fi, Thirlwall, N. Johnston, C. Morgan, (captain). Referee: Mr. L, P. Swarbrick. The game was rather more even than the final scores would indicate. Matamata had a more experienced team, being rated with a total handicap of 14 goals, while the Morrinsville team of boys had a handicap of only 5. In games for the Somers Cup handicaps are not taken into consideration, goals scored only being counted. The Matamata players were better mounted, and hit with more effect. Morrinsville’s young players gave another excellent display which earned them the praise of their opponents.

In the first chukka Matamata scored two goals. Morrinsville scored in the third, and Matamata added three goals in the fourth. Matamata scored two goals in the fifth and sixth chukkas. In the seventh and final chukka Morrinsville scored two goals in good style, but Matamata came again and scored two more to win by 11 —3. Exchange of Cups

After the game the visitors and players were entertained at afternoon tea provided by the Morrinsville ladies in the pavilion. Mr. L. P. Swarbrick apologised for the'absence of Mr. J. H. Gaddes, president of the Morrinsville Polo Club, and presented the Somers Cup to Mr. C. Morgan, captain of the Matamata team. Congratulating the Matamata players on “ coming over and teaching our boys a little about the game,” Mr. Swarbrick said the Morrinsville club was only a young club and was looking to tho older clubs to give help.

Mr. Morgan replied that it was the first time that the Matamata club had won the Somers Cup. He congratulated Morrinsville on having put up such a stout resistance considering the youth of the Morrinsville players. He was sure that in a year or two the Morrinsville team would take a lot} Of beating. - Mr. A. S. Thirlwall,' president of the Matamata Polo Club, then presented to Mr. P. Swarbrick, captain of the Morrinsville team, the Boys Cup, which Matamata had been unable to defend as only three players of under 21 could be found to play against Morrinsville. Mr. Thirlwall called for cheers for the Morrinsville ladies for providing refreshments: Among those who watched, the game were Mr. and Mrs. A. >&. Morrinsville’s ydophies The Morrinsville Polo Club now holds the Boys’ Cup, the Ladies’ Cup and the Buchanan Cup, besides the Handicap Cup to be defended at the next South Auckland Easter tournament. Next Saturday the Morrinsville team will defend the Boys’ Cup against a team of boys from the Waihou club.
