BUYING SILK STOCKINGS.
There are four silk stocking tests that, any woman can apply, and be sure they .arc .efficient,. since they are' used in the factories during the grading process. first, squeeze .the .silk between the hands to discover .whether .it is real or artificial. Real siik is pliable, but artificial silk is rather . springy and usually has a sort of super gloss on it. This gloss is not. so readily detected in .artificial light, of course, though there can be no mistake when it i; examined by .daylight. The second test is that of weave and texture, and ;amy defects. here may be seen at once simply .by holding the stockings up. to .the light.; If the weave is irregular, the light will be obscured in places, and you .will ..know that “ladders” wall very quickly form. Now take particular notice of the marks at, the siaes of tike leg i ntake sure that they are really “fashion" marks, and that the stocking taxes its shape and fullness from them, lln cheap stockings, they are frequently imitations. The third thing to watch for is width. Examine the width at the top and see that it will give sufficient play for bending the knee. And if the stockings have cotton tops, ;be sure there are ladder-proof (Strips i between the cotton and the silk. They can bo seen in the form of crossed rtbreads at the joins, and the tiny knots so formed prevent suspender ‘“ladders " trom running down the «todkiqgs. The fourth test concerns .size. ,>See that the inside of the font is. almost straight, to ensure plenty of room ifor the toes An even bettor fit is ’the stocking that has a small horizontal seam at the too, instead of si w.ov.en j finish.
