MISCELLANEOUS SPORTING.

[By Gleaner.| RACING. Plenty racing over the week-end. AA'ellington Gup Trial was expected to be a real try-out for Trotting Cup candidates. Harold Logan has been doing some sensational work-outs. He may be driven by Scotty Bryce, but there are rumours of this astute mentor 'being in Harold Thorpe’s sulky with Jimmy driving Kohara. The disqualification of Ngiiigongingo and A. Bryce lor 12 months caused a sensation. There is no doubt that on the second day's running Bryce has a good chance of his appeal succeeding, but he should have been put out on the Ist day’s performance. Arethusa and Red Shadow should provide fireworks if they could meet in some special matches. Giro and Silver de Oro arc two good youngsters. Giro appeals most as a Derby horse. Gay Orest is rounding up into Cup form but if he persists in hanging out on opponents Bert Ellis will have to earn his riding fee to help him straight. Northern critics don’t give Riri and Latin Quarter much show in N.Z. Cup. The latter comes from a “clever” stable which has put some hot ones across of late yeans. On form Hazlett’s horse has about as much show of winning a N.Z. Cup as Tom Heeney has of winning the heavy weight title of the world. The defeat of Monarchy at Gisborne was a body blow to Hawkes Bay punters.

Mr Corry must -be a sorry man that Croupier wasn’t entered far the Derbies. Kozan and Croupier will probably both be started in the Stewards’ Handicap. Jimmy Ellis will ride Croupier. Bronze Eagle is greatly favoured for X.Z. Derby. Gallant Fox, Cricket Bat, Zeebrugge and Co. will make him feel the miles. Johnny Jason, at the beginning of the season, proved himself better than an average Syr old only to bump into a brilliant opponent like Ammon Ea. The former’s owner, however, would be compensated for previous defeats by his horse’s good win .'in V. CE. C< Derby on Saturday. To-day the Melbourne Cup is run. After Phar Lap’s win in the Melbourne Stakes he looks a bigger moral than ever for the big race if he starts. Very few horses have won the Stakes Cup, but given a firm course the big horse looks like creating a weight-carrying record. Our X.Z. hope, Concentrate, proved by his second in the Stakes that he wilt give the champion a good go over 2 miles. All three placed horses in the Stakes were X.Z. bred, but Concentrate is the only one owned in X.Z. Oratorian has been clue for a win for some time and Trainer Lorigan will feei that his faith in this well "bred youngster has not been misplaced. , To-day final payments for X.Z. Trotting Cup are due. There should not be many withdrawals. The win of Logan Park over the mile X.Z. Cup Trial on Saturday will probably not bring him into additional favour for- the Trotting (Cup as he has always been a top-notcheir ■over the distance .

King’s Guard, a young trotter of class, justified his owner’s belief that lie would win at the Hu-tt. Ho ran a Ist and a 2nd. Tommy Wills would catch a few of the best with Fitzquex at Carterton. Jaloux ran two honest races at Trontham. Mr Greenwood’s disappointing racer improved with these and won well on Saturday at Banks Peninsula. F. D. Jones didn’t win out of his turn with Moorbird, a speedy mare lacking in stamina. Although Quinopal suffered defeat both days at Trentham ho won’t always be meeting a Captain’s Gift. Both hurdlers arc good class and should take some money at the November meeting. CRICKET. Congratulations to Skipper Gardiner and his team on their win against Luggate. The Burnett Shield should remain in Queenstown for some time. S. Africa opened badly against S. Australia. The wicket should have suited them but Clarrie Grimmott had them guessing, and then Wall got on with some of his expresses. But Grimmett with 6 for 50 was the only really dangerous bowler. Christy batted patiently for his 03 but Taylor was disappointing. Very poor bowling characterised the opening club games at Auckland, while cold wintry weather made things unpleasant at Wellington. McCabe, the young Australian XI batsman, is showing great form with the bat this season. Don Bradman has definitely turned down Accrington club’s offer and will remain in Australia for the coming season at any rate . The stormy petrol of Invercargill cricket is evidently Dr Uttley, of S. B.H.S. GENERAL. Local tenuis players have had some real tennis weather lately. Quito a number of ladder matches have been played, but the top-ranking players haven’t been bothering themselves much. ' ■ For the future Otago, North Otago, S. Canterbury and Southland are grouped to provide a team to play in Wilding Shield matches. Dr Moody and S. Falconer, ranking 4th on the Otago doubles ladder, are playing so well together that they should reach top place before the season closes.

The Southland Rowing Association has at last secured an 8-oared 'boat. It would Re a great draw card tor the local Regatta Committee to promote a race for the Otago and Southland eights. Kara Pasha found the forceful Aussie, Billy Meeshe too many for him, and the Terrible Turk caved in. On November 14 Bobby Delaney (Aus.) will meet Reg. Trowern at Wellington, while Dunedin will stage a Ted Morgan-To'mmy Fairhall fight on 9th November. Poor putting cost A. D. S. Duncan the N.Z. Amateur Golf championship. The depression has hit howling clubs harder than any other sport.

Clubs in' Dunedin, Christchurch, AA'ellington and Auckland all have the same story of resignations and decreased membership. The N.Z. Rowing championships will be held on the AA r aikato river at Hamilton on 29th January, 1932, while the Championship eights race will be held at Picton.
