Lake County Jockey Club.

The annual meeting of subscribers to above Club held at Eichardt's Hotel on Friday afternoon lart. was well attended—there being present over 20 members—Dr Donaldeon, vice president, in the chair. . Minutes of previous meeting were read ana confirmed. The Chairman, on behalf of the outgoing commitee, said it was a matter of congratulation to state that the last annual meeting had been a very satisfactory one, having resulted in a credit balance of £7l but, had there beeu a spring meeting, tbe lo* over that would, no doubt, have considerably lessened the gains for the year. Mr T. Gilmour, secretary, said the very low price realised for the grand stand last yew also made a difference in tbe profits. The election of office-bearers and members of committee was then proceeded with, when Dr* Douglas aud Donaldson, were unanimously re-elected president and vice-president respectively. Mr Gilmour, in reply to questions, said that, according tha rules, the members of committee consisted of eleven, without the president, vice-presi-dent, treasurer and secretary who were members by virtue of their office. The committee had power to fill up vacancies occurring during the year, snd they also appointed the stewards, who held office six days before and after each meeting. Sixteen candidates were proposed as members of committee and, on a ballot being taken, the following were elected : —Messrs J. Black, W. G. Donne, J. Dungey, J. Gilmour, A. P. Green, C. E. Gudgeon, J. L. Jopp, T. F. Malaghan, K Mottsoo, J. and M. O'Meara. The Chairman returned thanks on behalf of Drs Douglas and himself for re-election (the first-named being unavoidably absent from the district). He read a letter from the secretary tendering his resignation wh'ch, as vice-president, he received with regret, as he thought that a great deal of the saccess of the Club in the past had been due to llr Gilmour in fulfilling his, at times, arduous duties. Mr Witchell, who has left the district, also tendered his resignation as treasurer. The resignations were accepted with regret on tbe motion of Mr Smith, who said he thought Mr Gilmour had been an especially good officer—in fact, he had evidently been the right man in the right place—and he (the speaker) only hoped the Club would get an equally good successor. Two applications were received for the secretaryship—from Messrs C. C. Boyes and Herbert Black (formerly at Cromwell) whose names were submitted ■pro forma. Messrs Dungey and T. F. Malaghan were proposed and on going to the ballot Mr Malaghan was declared elected. Mr A. P. Green was unanimously elected hon. treasurer vice Mr Witchell resigned. Messrs J. O'Kane and H. B. Smith were elected members of committee in place of Messrs Malaghan and Green. Mr R. H. Eaird was elected a member of the Club on the motion ot Messrs Dungey and Jopp. A discussion took place with regard to the forthcoming meeting in January next and it was resolved. on the motion of Messrs Dungey and Smith, that the amount of stakes to be run for be £350 —tbe same as last season. Also resolved on the motion Messrs Dungy and Donne —That Messrs Black, Gilmour, J. O'Meara, H. B. Smith and the mover be a sub-committee to draw up programme, the same to be submitted at committee meeting to be held on 6th instant (today) at 4 p.m.—also for the appointment of other necessary officers. The question arose as to whether the totalisator commission Bhould be 10 per cent as hitherto, and the new stamp duty of l£% now payable be deducted therefrom, or whether it would be more advisable to make tbe commission on takings IJ% more—The decision was held over. The chairman called attention to the desirability of looking after a few requirements on the course, and also of appointing somebody to receive the winning horse after each race. He also thought the stewards' room ought to be enlarged. M r Black said it was a question whether the expenses of the latter should not be borne by tbe trustees, who, he understood, intended to paint and repair the building as soon as possible. He also offered as a suggestion to the programme committee that it would be better to have only one trotting race. Mr Dungey did not think such arrangement would pay, as outsit e owners of horses would not come up and contest a single event MrGilm-ur also thought there should be mors than one one trot or none at all. The matter then dropped. Mr Smith handed in a tender for working the totalizator from Messrs Cowan and Co., who be said had given every satisfaction to clubs for which they have worked. The tenders were returned, as being informal and it was resolved, on the motion of Messrs J. O'Meara and Black-That these person who have totalizators be written to and asked to send in tenders, to be tumbitted at next meeting.
