Ladies' Ball at Garston.
(Feom an Occasional Cobkespondknt.) On the evening of the 30th October a very Urge gathering assembled at the School-house, Athol, to attend a ball given by the young ladies of the district The weather being all that could be desired, m< st of those who had received invitations attended and, at 8.45, about 30 couples responded to the M.C.'s invitation to join in the grand march and polka—the pretty dresses and smiling faces of the ladies forming a picture not soon to be forgotten. Dancing having been started, it was kept up with great spirit until after daylight, and those who had attended from a long distance, had no cause to regret their journey. An example set by the yonng ladies—in the manner in which they did their utmost to make those assembled e»iioy themselves mi-ht, with profit, be copied by the ladies of larger towns. During the evening refreshment* of all kinds were most literary supplied, and the pleasing manner in which the fair hostesses attended to the wants of their guests, added greatly to the enjoyment of a most pleasant eveniug. In the intervals between some of the dances, songs were kindly rendered by Miss King and Messrs E. Soper, S. Soper, J. Harris and J. Boyer. and were thoroughly appreciated-as was also a recitation capitally by Mr Harry Copeland. A Highland fling, by Mr Gillies, was received with great applause. The music was supplied by Messrs Ernest Soper and J. Butson (violins), assisted by Master George Soper (accordion); Mr Sam Soper gave every satisfaction by the efficient manner in which he earned out the duties of M.C., and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to those gentlemen f<-r their services. A vote of thanks was also passed to the young ladies of Athol for the creditable manner they had conducted their somewhat difficult undertaking, which —needless to say-was carried with the greatest enthusiasm. The party then broke up, having passed oue of the most enjoyable evening ever spent in Athol.
