LATE MR J. A. CASSIDY.

THE FUNERAL. ; Many sections of the community were represented at the funeral of the late Mr James Andrew Cassidy yesterday. The cortege moved from the residence in Chester Street to the Roman Cathplio Cathedral, where a solemn Requiem Mass was held. Dr Kennedy and Father Long officiated, and Father's Price and Bonnetto were present in the Sanctuary. After leaving the Cathedral the cortege went to the Linwood Cemetery, where Dr Kennedy and Father Long officiated. The bearers were: Messrs P. J- Amodeo, H. D. Andrews, A. T. Donnelly, F. W. Johnston, C. S. Thomas, and T. D. Harman. Mrs J. A. Cassidy and Miss K. Cassidy, Mr and Mrs Hugh Cassidy, and Mr and Mrs T. Cahill were the chief mourners. REFERENCE IN SUPREME COURT. When the civil session of the* Supreme Court 'opened yesterday, Mr J. J. Dougall, vice-president of the Canterbury LaAv Society, said that he wished to say a few words of tribute and respect to the memory of one who had just passed away. The society regarded Mr Cassidy's death; as a considerable loss to the Bar of the He had been a man of outstanding personality, and a man of many parts. As a barrister he had practically confined his attention to the Police Court, and in that Cflurt he had probably had no superior in New Zealand. For twenty years he had acted as Law Reporter in 1 the Supreme Court, and he had also' been a prominent member of the Law Council, in which capacity he had given great assistance to other members of the profession. The'society also wished to extend its sympathy and condolence to the late Mr Cassidy's wife "and family. His Honor, Mr Justice Herdman, said that he had not had the good fortune to know Mr Cassidy intimately,}; although for mahj- years he had known him by repute. ' During his career Mr Cassidy had gained the confidence of the public and the respect of .his,' proi fessional- brethren. His Honor said that he deeply regretted that Mr Cassidy was no longer with them, and he. desired to express his sincere sympathy with the members of the family.
