CITY STREETS.

COUNCILLORS’ OUTINjG. At the invitation of the Canterbury Automobile Association the Christchurch city councillors were taken for a drive round the streets of the city yesterday. The oars left the City Council Chambers at 2.30 p.m. The weather was beautifully fine and the roads were in good order. The object of the outing was to point out to the councillors the dangerous oorners and crossings of the city. The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) and the Town Clerk, both of whom are members of the party which is at present inspecting the Otira tunnel works, were unable to bo present.

The following were present:—The Deputy-Mayor (Mr A. Williams), Councillors W. Nioholls, J- W. Beanland, EJ. Howard A. M’Kellar, H. Hunter, P. R. Climio, A. S. Taylor, J. R. Hayward and the assistant town clerk (Mr J. S- Neville), and Mr W. H. Tjsdall (president of the Canterbury Antornobile Association). The party inspected Baxter’s crossing in Kilmoro Street, the corner of Winton and Forfar Streets, English’s corner at Holly Road and Springfield Road, Cook and Ross’s corner at Armagh and Colombo Streets, the Stanmore Road bridge, Stanmore Road, Colombo Street south bridge, and other places. The party, went at the rate of four miles an hour at the crossings at( Colombo Street and Armagh Street, Cashel Street and Colombo Street, Cashel Street and High Street, the Clock Tower and the Bank of New Zealand corner. The tour was concluded at Mr Tißdall’s residence at Opawa, where the members of the party were entertained, at afternoon tea. It was stated that the regulation of four miles an hour over crossings was impracticable, and might really become a source of danger, and demonstrations were given of the control over cars. Councilors expressed their satisfaction with the tour, and a hope was expressed that it would be made an annual funotion.
