MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M V presided yesterday at the Magistrate's Court. Margaret Isles, alias Thomas, alias M'Donald, was convicted and discharged on a charge of drunkenness. On a charge of using obsence language she was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour.

David Courtney (Mr Cassidy) was charged on separate counts with assaulting his two sisters, Martha and Annie Courtney. He was also charged with assaulting a Chinaman, Bah Toi. Sub-Inspector Hastie said' that one of the sisters had been struck on fhe mouth, and had lost two teeth. Mr Cassidy said, accused would plead guilty. The trouble had been that he had gone along to Bah Toi's house on December 8, and there he saw his mother's photo, on the wall and other things which aroused his indignation, and he committed the assault there and then. The Sub-Inspector said that accused had quarrelled with his sister Martha over a ring, and had struck her. The Chinaman came to the rescue, but wag hit on the jaw, and also had his wrist sprained. Tbe Magistrate said that accused had a bad re- * cord. The only thing in his favour was that he- had kept straight since 1914. For cycling without lights, Albert Wells was convicted and discharged, Frank Allison was fined' os. For motoring at' excessive speed, Charles Piner and John Badham were each fined 10s and costs. Badham was also fined 5s for motoring without a certificate of ability. For failing to notify a change of ownership of a motwr-cyole, S. A. M'Dougall was fined 5s and costs. Roland Lodge, for the theft of one shilling's worth of plums, was convicted and discharged, and ordered to pay witness's costs. An order was made at the rate of 28s per week on the pay of Joseph Albert Nicholl, a member of the Reinforcement?, for -the support of his wife. He was also ordered -to'pay 21s costs.

Nor.-attenders at drill parades were dealt with as follows: —Thomas Henry Bennett, fined 20s and costs; Herbert Dent, convicted and disehar&ed; H. W. C. Gardiner, convicted and discharged ; Arthur Hays, fined 30* and costs; Joseph Hodges, fined IDs and costs; Herbert Ibbexson. fined lCte and costs; G. A. Mofiett, fined 10s and cons.; Michael Noonan, convicted and discharged; J. W.-H. Webb, fined 20s pnd costs.

For failing to give notice of the erection of a building to the Woolston Borough Council, C. H. Moir was fined' 20s and costs.

John Storer (Mr Cassidy) applied to have Mrs Jessie M' Donald find sureties to keep the peace, alleging that she had used insulting language to him. The case was a neighbour's quarrel, and after hearing evidence tho Magistrate said that defendant must not use insulting language. On both parties undertaking to ceass ouarrelling the case was dismissed.

ASHBURTON. Mr V. G. Day. S.M., presided yesterday at the Magistrate's Court at Ashburton. William Henry Grainger, -who pleaded guiltv to driving a cart on the wrong -side of the main street, Ashburton, on January 15, whereby An accident occurred, was fined os and costs. *. For driving motor cars over the Ashburton traffic, bridge at a speed exceedin o- the-by-law. G. H. Bonnington. C- * h 7 Melhuish, E. Cannon, H. H. Bennett, and D. M'Kenclry were each fined 20s and costs. For a similar offence C. G. Morgan was convicted and otr dered to pay costs. For motoring at an excessive speed in /East Street on December 27, W. Jeffs, Richard Brown, G. F. Scott, and Fred D. Abbord were fined 20s a/id costs. Patrick Small, charged with failing to clear California a "thistle from his property at Wheatstone, was fined £lO and costs. For 'allowing his horses to wander on the publio road at Hinds, W. J. S. M'Dowell was fined 30s and costs. Judgment was given for plaintiffs by default with costs-in the following civil oases: —W. M'Tigue'v. W. M'Aieer, claim £2; J. A. Stephens v. Ernest A. I METHVEN. Mr 1? A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided on Thursday at the Magistrate 6 Court at Methven. James A. Smith, alias G. Mason, alias James Clark, was charged on the information of George Hewitt with behaving in a. tln-eatening manner towards the informant, by attempting to strike and threatening to murder nim at Methven on January 23. Accused was also charged with obtaining the sum of 10s by means of false pretences, from John Watson at Methven or January 23. Accused pleaded not guilty to the first charge, and guilt? to the second. On the first charge he was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and on the seconc charge he was fined-40s. A prohibition order was also -aken out against him. On the information of J. J. R. Blair. rangjar for) the Mount Hutt Road Board, J. Brick was charged with allowing sheep to wander on a public road on January 14. Defendant was fined 10s and costs. J. Blair also proceeded against JBriden for permitting a cow to wander on Cameron Street, Methven, on January 11. Defendant, who did not appear, was fined os and costs.
