WASHING AWAY.

HOKITIKA’S BEACH. UNFORTUNATE POSITION OF BUSINESS PEOPLE. [Per. Press Association ] GREYMOUTH. June 4. Tho position on Hokitika s sea-front is much the same, although it has been rumoured during tho last day or two that the town was being rapidly washed away. The groynes which have boon built and those which are still being built by the Public Works Department have had very little effect up to the present, but it is hoped that in the near future these. works will prove serviceable. The sea is very close to Revell Street at high water, and on this account the people do not relish the predicament and fear that exceptionally heavy seas at spring tides might break through the sand beach and find their way to the lower part of tho town. The erosion was again making its appearance during the last couple of days to tho rear portion of Revell Street, at the back of Mr Williams’s shop (chemist’s), which projects moro seaward than any other part. It is extremely unfortunate for the business people on the coast side of Revell Street, for it certainly appears that their business places will not bo safe, and if they are compelled to remove the expense will prove disastrous to the majority. However, most of them take it well, considering their losses, and are in hopes of matters again righting themselves at no very distant date.
