VESSELS AT STEWART ISLAND

[From Our Coiihkspondbmt.] INVERCARGILL, May 6. During the past few months a groat deal has been said and written ot the intentions of Norwegian whaling companies to exploit southern waters, m an interview which the' "Southland Times" representative had with. AW Wiig, Norwegian sub-Consul at »'«*> * few months ago, it was gathered that the arrangements which had been announced wore no idle boast. As a matter of fact, there was at that time lying at flobart the four-masted barque Mirmosa, which contained, boiling-down and manure manufacturing plants. It, was the Mimosa's intention to carry out whaling operations in lasmanian waters, and .then New Zealand s southern seas were to be exploited. The Mirmosa, which is owned by Messrs Dannivig and Co., of Hamg, has now completed her work on the Tasmania!! shores, and in accordance with the previously announced intentions set out for New Zealand On Sunday she arrived at Stewart Island, and is at present lying at anchor in the vicinity of Paterson's Inlet. Ihe Mirmosa is accompanied by a small tender steamer. Owing to their inaccessibility it is at present difficult to <ret any reliable information as to the exact movements of the whaling party The steamer is expected to arrive at Bluff to-morrow for coal supplies for the work to be carried on in the southern latitudes. It has been announced that the -New Zealand Whaling Company, winch has chartered the Rakuira and PrmM George, both of winch should reach New Zealand shortly, intends to confine operations to northern waters, as it s considered too late to go south this season.
