A largo gathering of tho staff and workers on the South Island Mam Trunk Railway (Parnassus section) took place, at the 'Spotswood Hall on Wednesday evening, to say good-bye to Inspector Bailey, who is retiring from tho staff of the Public Works Department to commence business on bis own account. The health of Mr Bailey was honoured, and Mr Dyson, on behalf of the staff and men, made him a presentation, which was suitably acknowledged. General regret wa3 expressed at Mr Bailey's departure, and all joined in wishing him success in his venture.

A very pleasant social gathering was held on' Friday last in the Governor's Bay Hall to say good-bye to Mr and Mrs Teape and family, who are leaving the district after a residence of twenty-eight years. There was a large attendance of residents from the various bays, During the evening the Rev G. W. Christian, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr and Mrs Teape with a silver tea set and tray, and expressed regret at their departure. Messrs T). Bamford, R. ADan and W. A. Carpenter also spoke", wishing Mr and Mrs Teape every success. Mr F. Tapley then presented the Misses Teape, on behalf of St Cuthbert's Church choir, with a Bible and hymnal and lady's companion. He expressed the choir's regret at losing their valued services. Mr Teape thanked those prosent on behalf of Mrs Teape and himself for their kind wishes, and also for their valuable present. Mr W. A. Carpenter returned thanks on behalf of the Misses Teape. Dancing was indulged in until the small hours of the morning.
