Mr G. Laurenson, M.P., arrived from Wellington by the Maori on Saturday Mr T. J. Hunter has been appointed a member of the Oxford Domain Board.

Mr W. E. Cook, of Linwood, has been appointed pupil teacher at the Doylestou school. Messrs P. Hercus, F. W. Johnston, and H. D. Acland left for Wellington by the Maori on Saturday evening. ‘Mr W. H. Atack, manager of the United Press Association, was a passenger for Wellington by the Maori on Saturday evening. The Hon Charles Louisson, M.L.C., and Mr W. Reece were passengers from Wellington by the ferry steamer on Saturday. Mr J. D. Ritchie, chairman of tho Land Purchase Commissioners, arrived from Wellington on Saturday, and went on to Otago by the first express train.

Mr F. E. Hyman, manager of the “ Lyttelton Times” Company, who has attended the annual meeting of the Press Association at Queenstown, returned to Christchurch on Saturday evening. Mr Walter Coath, manager of the Rakaia branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of his promotion to be manager of the Ivailcoura branch. Arrangements are being made to give Mr Coath a farewell from the Rakaia district. A Gore telegram states that Dr Janies Douglas, for many years in charge of the hospital at Queenstown, died on Friday, aged seventy-four. He was widely respected professionally and personally, was unmarried, and for over fifty years he was in practice. Mr J). M. Wilson, General Manager of the Tourist Department, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He will stay in tile city to-day and to-morrow, attending to departmental affairs here, and will leave for Mount Cook on Wednesday morning. After spending a few days at the Hermitage, he will return to Christchurch and go on to Wellington. On Thursday evening the residents of Lincoln entertained Mr James Doherty at a smoke concert. Mr Doherty has spent many years in Lincoln, and the esteem in which he was bald was shown by the large gathering, which included visitors from Halswell, Tai Tapu and Springston. Mr R. W. , Loch head presided, and spoke of tho admirable services Mr Doherty bad rendered the district, and his personal qualities. On behalf of a large number of subscribers, he presented to Mr Doherty two easy-chairs for himself

and Mrs Doherty. A musical programme was given by Messrs E. A. Akins, R. H. Webb. I’. M’Anulty and A. Cooksou. Air L. Cookson did some conjuring, and Mr C. Kelleher danced a hornpipe.
