AUSTRALIA v. SOUTH AFRICA. FIFTH TEST MATCH. United Press Association —By Electric Telegrunh—Copyright. SYDNEY, March 4. The fifth test match was resumed today. The weather was warm, and the wicket assisted the howlers. Bardsley (S 3) and Whitty (2) resumed the Australian innings, the score standing at 281 for three wickets. Several maiden overs were bowled in the early part of the play, but Whitty increased his score to 13 before he was brilliantly caught by Nourse at deep square leg off Llewellyn. Four for 296. Trumpor opened with three fours, and 300 appeared cn the board for 223 minutes’ batting.- Shortly afterwards Bardsley hit. a ball back to Sinclair. His score of 94 occupied 137 minutes, and included nine fours. His innings was cliancsless, but be had obviously not recovered from the recent injury to his hand, which was shaking after , each hard stroke. Five for 317. Kill scored a single and then gave a chance of stumping, but Sherwell failed to secure the ball, this being tbo first opportunity lie lias missed in Sydney. Trumper made 31 and then stepped out and missed a big offbreak from Schwarz, which bowled liim. Ho hit five fours. Six for 3-16. Tho bails later Armstrong was caught by Pearse off Schwarz before ho had scored. Seven for 316. In the next over Hill went out to Schwarz, but missed the ball, and Sherwell smartly stumped him. Eight for 351. The wicketkeeper repeated the performance by stumping Cottar in the following over—nine for 361—and in the next over he dismissed Ransford in the same way. Altogether it was the best display of wicketkeeping seen in Sydney for a long time. Schwarz finished up with an average for to-day’s play of five wickets for six runs. His bowling, with a tremendous off-break with a leg action, seemed to paralyse the batsmen.

Zulch and Pearse opened the South African innings, Cotter and Whitty being the bowlers. Whitty bowled Pearse before he had scored. One for 4. After six overs Hordc-rn tcok up tho bowling, and the score mounted till Zulch, jumping out to a gcoglie, was stumped. Two for 47. Faulkner and Nourse then became associated, but the scoring was slow. Armstrong was given a turn with the ball, and with the fifth ball of his first over he bowled Nourse, who had batted thirtythree minutes for throe runs. Three for 70. Faulkner reached 50 in seventy-live minutes, but a few minutes later he was bowled by Armstrong. His score included six fours. Four for 81. Sinclair attempted to liven matters up, but he pulled one of Hordern’s googlies and Ransford made a brilliant catch on the boundary, the ball swerving several yards. Five for 87. Hordern’s bowling was very puzzling, and even tho wicket-keeper did not always know which way the ball was going, the break frequently beating him. Snooko scored eighteen, and then jumped out and swiped wildly at a ball from Hordern, which bowled him. Six for 115. Strieker was very slow, and was batting fifty minutes for 19. Then he attempted to drive Hordern, but lifted the ball to Macartney at mid-off. Seven for 128. Schwarz came next, and lio received an ovation for his bowling performance. He scored 13 and was then run out. He drove a ball hard, and though it passed Cotter, the fieldsman ran and made a wonderful stop and, returning smartly, hit the wicket. Eight for 144. Llewellyn was the next victim. After batting soundly for 24 he tipped lielleway and was caught behind the wickets. Nine for 160. Pegler did not have a strike, as Sherwell skied the next ball, from 'Whitty, and was caught by Bardsley at square leg. The innings closed for 160, or four runs short of the number required to save a follow-on. Hill sent the South Africans in again, Sherwell and Zulch opening to the bowling of Cotter and Armstrong. When Sherwell was 14 Armstrong beat him with a bail which just lifted the bails. The fielding was good throughout the whole day. The following are the scores:
