SWIMMING.

NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS.

United Press Association—By Electric Telcgrap-l—Copyright. SYDNEY, March 5

The amateur swimming championships of New South Wales were begun yesterday. The following are the results :

100YDS CHAMPIONSHIP—C. Hcaly 1, W. Long worth 2, A. D. Hill 3. A great race; won by a touch. Lime—6oscc. 880YDS CHAMPIONSHIP W. Longworth 1, C. Healy 2. S. Wright 3. Won by sixty yards. Time—llmin 31sec.

As all the Australian championships except the 220yds breast-stroke have been won this season by representatives of New South Wales, the championships of the Mother State are unusually interesting and important. Tho result of the 100yds confirms recent statements that Healy had recovered from tho staleness which affected him during the Australian meeting in January, but the time of the race is disappointingly slow. L. Solomons won tho Australian championship from Healy and H. Hardwick seven weeks ago in 58 l-ssee; Healy and Hardwick share tho Australasian record of 57sec, and Longvvorth swam 100yds quite recently in 57 2-osec, and established a new record for 110yds. If the conditions were not unfavourable, the New South Wales championship time should have been better than a minute. Hardwick, who has been selected to represent Australasia in the Festival of Empire sports, did not enter for the State championship, but when the last mails left Sydney there was no suggestion that Solomons would not be a competitor. Longworth is in recordbreaking mood, and the slowness of Saturday’s race is difficult to account for.

With Hardwick out of the way, Longworth’s success in the half-mile race would be expected. In the Australian championship Hardwick beat his rival in the rather slow time of 12min IGlsec, but Longworth won the 1320yds in record time, and the mile also. His subsequent form has shown him to be improving all round, and his time on Saturday, llmin 31sec, is the best that has been made in Australia for a very long time, being only 20sec slower than the phenomenal record credited to the late B. B. Kieran. There has been a movement in New South Wales to send Longworth as well as Hardwick to London, and with this in view ho would certainly try to do Iris best in the distance event. Healy evidently is still showing good form in the longer distances, but the figures put up by Longworth are a great deal better than anything the sprint champion has done. The mile championship will be decided in Sydney this evening, the 220yds breast-stroke and 440yds on Wednesday, and the 220yds and 500yds teams’ race on Saturday. A. Wickham, the holder of the 100yds breaststroke championship of Australia, is in Tasmania at present, but is expected to return to Sydney in time to compete ill the teams’ race. Freyberg took the lead from tho start and never appeared to be really pushed, winning by about seven yards. Time —Gmin 3sec. DUTHIE CUP RELAY RACE. 200ydsClyde Quay School 1.
