The Hon C. Louisson arrived from Wellington by the Maori yesterday morning. Messrs A. G. Glover (Wellington), E. Peltyer (Sydney), W. Irving Carney (Boston) and N. Victcrsien (New York) arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning. Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., left for Wellington last night to attend a sitting of "the Civil Service Superannuation Board. Mr D. A. Aitken, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, left for Wellington by the Maori last evening. Dr P. T. Herring, eon of Mr Edward Herring, of Christchurch, and formerly of Ashburton, paid a visit to Ashburton yesterday. Mr T. M. 0. Cleary, honorary secretary of the Lyttelton Regatta Committee, is progressing favourably towards recovery after an illness of some weeks’ duration. Amongst the passengers for Wellington by the Maori last evening were Messrs T. Brown. C. M. Gray, C. H. Hewlett, R. R. Spence, G. P. Wake, J. Anderson and Dr Bett. Mr B. Hill, for many months operator of the picture entertainment at. the Colosseum, has accepted an' engagement. at the Sj'denham Picture Theatre, and will commence there next week. . The Revs E. Drake, J. B. Suckling, G. Knowles Smith, W. Laycock, G. Froggatt. R.. T. Coatsworth Dudley, J. Harris, T. A. Pybus and A. Harding were passengers for Wellington by the Maori last evening. Lieutenant - Colonel H. G. Payne, V.D., died at New Plymouth yesterday. He had been thirty-six years in the A Battery. New Zealand Artillery, Auckland. He took up his residence in Taranaki several years ago Commander Blunt, of the Pioneer, whose term of service on the Australasian station will expire this month, will be succeeded on the drill ship by Commander Philip J. Stopford- The Pioneer left Wellington on Monday evening for Sydney direct. There was a large gathering at the Cheviot Town Hall on Monday evening, for the purpose of making a. presentation to Mr C. W. Leo, who has been for some time local manager for Messrs Dalgety and Co., and who is leaving to take up a similar position in Ashburton. Mr'G. W. Forbes. M.P., presided, and Mr S. C. Smith made the presentation, which consisted of a purse of sovereigns.
