Messrs S. F. Hunt (New York), G. T. Beaver (Blackheath, England), T. White, C. B. Bird and W. Dimook (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning. The Rev 0. G. Biddle arrived from Dunedin by the 6.6. Mokoia yesterday morning. A recent Sydney paper mentions the marriage engagement of Mies Yina de Loitte to Mr Howard Vernon, both well known on the colonial operatic stage. Constable Nelson has been transferred from the district office in Christchurch to the Commissioner’s office in Wellington, and his place will be filled by Constable Grace, at present on© of the watchhouse-keepers. Constables Langmuir and Cleary have arrived in Christchurch from the depot at Wellington. Sir Joseph Ward has booked bis passage by the P. and O. Line, 'and will leave about the middle of February, to attend "the Postal Conference, which will open in Rome ou April 21. Every country in the Postal Union, will be represented. The Minister will bo accompanied by Lady Ward arid his daughter; Mr Gray, secretary to the Post Office; and Mr B. Wilson, his private secretary. He will return by way of America, reaching the colony about the middle of July. A party of four American ladies who are touring the colony arrived in Christchurch yesterday from the south. They are. Mies Hamlin and Miss J. Hamlin, of Boston, and Mies Plankinton aud Miss Hiland, of Milwaukee. _ Mr F. Waymouth returned to Christchurch from the south by the second express train last evening. Mr L. A. Rutherford (Hawarden) and Mr T. C. Robinson (Cheviot) arrived in town by the train from the north last evening. Mr W. Adams (Blenheim), Mr W. A. Midlane (Wellington), Mr T. 8.. Trumbull (Boston), and Mr R. ActonAdams (Woodbank) were among the arrivals in Christchurch yesterday. The express trains from the south brought a number of visitors to Christchurch yesterday. Among them were Messrs J. 0. N, Grigg (Longbeach), R. Friedjander, H. Fnedlander, D. Friedlander and G. W. Leadley (Ashburton), T. Dowling (Hinds), T. 0. Price (Dunedin), W. Ncsworthy (Mount Somers), D. G. Wright (Windermere), and A. Lorie (Auckland). The Tutanekai sailed from Auckland yesterday for the north, with the Governor, Lady Plunket and party. They will he away for about a fortnight. Mr A. H. Cockayne, Assistant Government Biologist, who has been spending a week in Christchurch, left for Wellington by the Mokoia yesterday.
