The Department or Industries and Commerce has received the following cable message from the High Commissioner, dated London, December 16:— “ The mutton market is quiet, but steady, at last week’s quotations. The lamb market is very dull. Australian lamb is in large supply. New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is quoted at 4d, and brands other than Canterbury at 3Jd, and Australian 3|d. There is no alteration in the beef market since last week. The butter market is very firm, and the supply falls short of the demand. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted at 116 s per cwt; Danish at 120 s. The cheese market is firm, and prices continue to advance. The cargo of cheese by the Paparoa arrived in good condition. New Zealand is quoted at 61s per cwt, and Canadian at 625. The hemp market is steady, and fair business is doing. The price of New Zealand hemp, ‘ good fair Wellington ’ grade on spot to-day,is £3l 10s per ton; January to March shipnients £3l. 1 The cocksfoot seed market is quiet. Bright clean New- Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171 b per bushel, on spot, is quoted at 52s par cwt.”

Messrs Winohcombe, Carson and Co., Sydney, report under date December 18 as follows:—We sold over six thousand bales of .wool to-day at auction and privately. There was a large attendance of buyers. Greasy fleece sold to 13id, scoureds to 24d. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, have received the following cable from their London Office, under date December 15:—The market for hides is very firm. Since our last telegram prices of leather are higher by Jd per lb, and of basils by jd to Id per lb. •
