AKAROA REGATTA.

The Akaroa Regatta Committee was favoured with ideal weather for its annual regatta, and although the prospects wore not bright in the early morning, a largo number of excursionists left by the Rotomaliana for a. pleasant three-hours’ trip round to the Peninsula port. The return trip was delayed by an inconvenient tide, but the boat was back in Lyttelton _ soon after seven o’clock. The racing was first class, and although Christchurch sent good representative crews, Akaroa succeeded in annexing most of the events, and secured the Milne trophy. Everything went smoothly, and there were no fiascos in the matter of races. In the Maiden Fours the competitors tacked half a mile on to their course, but the mistake could not have affected the placing. The officials were as follow : starter, Mr A. E. Craddock; judges, Mcisem J. D. . Brace, E. E. G. Armstrong and H. G. Robson; umpires, Messrs J. D. Bruce and E. E. Lolxevre ; hanidicappors, Messrs Bruce', Milne and Gray; honorary secretary, Mr ti. U. Jacobson; honorary treasurer, Ml Jd. C. Or bell. The following are details of the racing JUNIOR FOURS; first £l2 second £3; ono mile and a half—Akaroa (G. Whelch sir., L. Ditely, F. Westenra, B. Gutirie str., Ilealy, Osbiston, Tudhope bow), 3 Christchurch Amateurs also started, a. good start was effected, the crows keeping well together for the first quarter. Akaroa ikon took the lead, closely followed by Union, Canterbury and Avon. Akaroa maintained their noaition to the end, winning by a length. Avon, Christchurch Amateurs and Union also started, Union's boat swamping. , ,V 1terbury broke away at the start, and took the lead, Akaroa and Lyttelton being, in emse touch. This was one of the beat races of the day. From the start Akaroa and Canterbury kept ahead, neither crew having any advantage. About fifty yards from home Akaroa forged ahead with n fine spurt, and won by three feet. Avon -were two lengths away third. SENIOR PAIR OARS; first £9, second £2; ono mile and a half—Akaroa (M. Kearney, L. Ditely and L. Armstrong cox). 1; Union (J. Fry, F. Otley and E. Stace cox), 2; Union (T. Chambers, W. Duggan and J. Sterling cox), 3. Canterbury and Lyttelton also started. At tbe pistol Akaroa shot ahead, followed by the Union crews and Canterbury. The winners were never in trouble, and won easily, but a good struggle for second place oaw only a length between the boats when the line was crossed. MAIDEN DOUBLE SCULLS; first £7, second £3; one mile —Union (W. Clemens, E. Clemens and N. Barlow cox), 1; Avon (F. Deightou, A Evans and J. M’Laren cox), 2. Canterbury, Akaroa, Cure and Christchurch Amateurs also started. The Union crew took tho lead, and won, after a. good struggle, by * length. SENIOR DOUBLE SCULLS; first £9, second £2; one mile and a half—Akaroa (J. WoodiM and G. Whelch). 1; Union (J. Fry and P. Otley, 2; Union (T. Chambers and W. Duggan), 3. Lyttelton and Canterbury also started. Akaroa jumped at the start, and maintained* a good lead to the finish. The Union crews had a good fight for second place, but Fry again beat Chambers. YOUTHS’ DOUBLE SCULLS; first £6, second £1; one mile—Avon (I/. Deighton, A. Dunn find R. Kircher cox), 1: Cure (G. Templeton, A. Brierly and L. Keetley. cox), 2; Akaroa (W. Munro and C. Walker), 3. Xiyttellon and Canterbury also started. This raco resulted in a capital struggle between Cure and Avon. Up to the. last three hundred yards there was little to choose between them, hut Deighton put in a well-timed spurt, and won by a length and a half, Akaroa being close up. JUNIOR DOUBLE SCULLS; first £3, second £2; one mile—Akaroa (M. Kearney, L. Ditely, E. Spooner cox), 1; Canterbury (A. Tucker and S. Hobbs), 2; Cure, 3. Christchurch Amateur, Union (2) and Avon also started. The boats kept fairly together until the buoy was turned, Akaroa getting tho advantage, followed by Union, Cure and Cantermury. AkaroaJed to tire finish, and beat Canterbury by a length. , SINGLE SCULLS; first £5. second £1; ono mile—Akaroa (J. Woodill, L. Armstrong cox), 1; Union (J. Fry. J. Sterling cox), 2; Union (P. Otley, E. Stace oox) 3. Avon, 'Cure and Canterbury scratched. Woodill broke away at the start, and hadi no difficulty in keeping his opponents off. A good struggle ensued between Fry and Otley, the latter being beaten by bis own club-mate by two lengths. Only two entries were received for tho oil launch race, which was abandoned.
