WELLINGTON INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.
PESSIMISTIC SPEECHES. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 24. Reference was. made to the Christchurch Exhibition at the annual dinner of the Industrial Association. Mr T. Ballinger said that it would bo very interesting, and'bring a large influx of visitors, and indirectly the gain would be large; but they could hardly 7 expect it to he a financial success. _ Most of the big exhibitions ended in a loss, though the small ones held by local Industrial Associations had all shown a profit. Replying to a toast, Mr S. Brown said that he was doubtful as to the after-effects of the Exhibition. It was inviting other countries to use New Zealand as a dumping ground, and after the Exhibition, with all this stuff dumped on the markets, there would be a depression, and the loss would fall on the colony as a whole. At another stage the same speaker said_ that in many lines manufacture in New Zealand would be largely crippled at no very distant date, and wo were not training up any artisan class. The Harvester Trust was also the topic of speeches, and the general consensus of opinion of members of the House of Representatives and others present was that something must bo done, and it was hoped that the labour conference would be able to come to a modus vivendL
