FOOTBALL.
■ $ OPENING OF THE SEASON. SATURDAY'S MATCHES. On Saturday afternoon, the various athletic grounds which have been for the past six months the scene of the less exciting game of cricket were given up to football, and although the weather was rather warm for any hard fought practice contests, a great deal of enthusiasm was manifested by'those who took part in the various games. Most of the local teams opened the season with scratch matches. The grounds were in very good order, although on the hard side. All things considered, the season promises to prove quite as successful as previous years, and probably more so, in view of the fact-that a combination of New Zealand players will bo chosen to tour Great Britain during the football season of 1905-0. The members of the Linwood Club opened tho season in the afternoon. There was a large muster of players. Tho Senior team played a gamo with Canterbury College. Ryan, Tine a?jd Bishop made their first appearance for Linwood, and Collins and Piper for Canterbury College.
