Tiie opening day of the boating season in Christchurch has been fixed for Labour Day, Oct. 8. The committee -has succeeded' inl arranging a programme whioh is considerably in advance of those of recent years. Amongst novel items will be 'a " land andl water race," open to. all comers, in w.hdoh the contestants will race both through the water and across country. Liberal prizes are offered.
The first meeting of the recently-elected committee of the Canterbury Rowing- Club was held on Friday, fourteen, members being present, with) tie captain (Mr W. A. O'Ca'llaghan) in the chair. Messrs Fox and Thompson, of Christ's College, were elected! College members. It was decided to support Picton as the course for tie championship regatta, and Mr N. L. Macbeth was nominated as local officer to the Association. Messrs F. I. Cowlishaw and A. L. Styche were appointed to carry out arrangements for afternoon tea on opening day, admission to be by ticket only. It was agreed tbati members should be asked to support the fete in connection with' the Veterans' Homei by attending in a body on an evening to be decided upon. A suggestion that a. piano should be provided for tie social hall met witb tie committee's approval, and a subcommittee was appointed to see what support would be given by the members. The following entries, constituting a record, have been received for the Canterbury Rowing Club's President's Cup Race, to bei rowed early in November on Kerr's Reach : —M'Draith (stroke), Hawkins, Appleby and Mouat; E. R. Guthrie (stroke), Horsley and R. J. Hobbs; H. S. Hobbsi (stroke), Johnston, Taylor and Fordhami; Little (stroke), Beat-tie, G. J. Robertsons and Jav; Avres (stroke), Button, Milsom and Budd; Lake (stroke), Moller, C. H. Hobbs and Parsons; Evans (stroke), Beau- ! champ, Morrison and L. V. Comerfordi. Entries for the same club's Trial Pairs will! close on Oct. 8.
