BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The Canterbury College Board of Governors met yesterday afternoon ; present—Mr T. S. Weston (chairman), Dean Harper, and Messrs T W. Adams, C Reid, C. Opie, A. E. G. Rhodes, T. Hughes, H. J. Berwick C. 0. Corfe, J. L. Scott, J. G. L. Scott. W. H. Montgomery, T. S. Foster and C. Lewis. Apologies were received for the absence of Bishop Grimes, Bishop Juluis «ud Dr Erwin.

It was decided on the motion of Mr Montgomery, seconded by Sir Adams, tiat a montily statement of accounts should be placed on the table. The North Canterbury Education Board wrote asking if the Board of Governors would offer special terms to teachers attending the approved classes at the School of Art. The Education Board has received a grant from tie Government, and it asked the Governors to give some further assistance in tie direction indicated. Tie matter was referred to tie Museum and Library Committee on tie motion of Mr Adams, seconded by Mr Opie,

The action of the chairman in affixing the seal to tie lease of reserve 696 to Mr Taylor, of Geraldine, was approved. Tie Chairman stated tiat Mr Cowlishaw, who had been solicitor to the Board for many years, had retired from the firm of Messrs Garrick, Cowlishaw and Fisher, and also from the practice of law. Mr J. B. Fisher, who had been communicated with, had written stating that for some time ie iad practically conducted the Board's business. As Mr Fisher wias well acquainted with the subject the Chairman moved that ie should be appointed solicitor.

This was seconded by Mr Berwick, and carried, and it was also decided on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Rhode?, that the Board should express appreciation of Mr Cowlishaw's services. The College Committee made the following recommendations : —l. That it was inexpedient to alter the present arrangement for the supply of text books to. the departments -under the control of the Board, as made with Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, the latter firm to keep Messrs Simpson and Williams fairly supplied in advance with the text books involved in the agreement; that mental science should be added after the words constitutional history" to the list of subjects in which college exhibitions were awarded, in the latter part of clause 2, of regulation. 1, Faculty of Arts. Science and Law, dealt with in the "College Calendar," for 1902, the alteration to come into operation at once, so us to be available, if required, at the ensuing annual college examination; that the word "Greek"' should be struck out where it appears in clause 2 of regulation 1 Faculty of Arts, Science and Law, and that an exhibition of the annual value of £2O should be offered for Greek. The report was adopted. Mr Adams gave notice to move at next meeting:—"That a statement be-prepared of the religious instruction that is given at the Boys' and Girls' High Schools under the control of the Board, the number of hours each week, and by whom the instruction is given."
