POLITICAL NOTES.
[From Oxjr Special Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, August 24. THE SHOPS AND OFFICES BILL. Several hours were spent in committee in the Legislative Council yesterday on tha Shops and Offices Bill. The clauses relating to warehouses were expurgated, which means that bank clerics are also excluded from’ the provisions of the Bill. In-a very thin Chamber, the Hon J. E. Jenkinson, by a majority of one, carried a now clause, to the effect that no barmaid should be employed in a public bar after 9 p.m. The Alinister immediately moved to report progress. When the Bill, or, rather, as much of it as is left, reaches the House it will receive a further severe handling. In face of the fact that only thirteen members voted for the clause under which barmaids are not to be employed after nine at night, an effort is to be made to have th© Bill recommitted and th© clause struck out in a fuller Council.
