They were hampered at 'the quarry, for mnt of rails. Bails ordered from Home W only just been shipped, and inquiries about the colony for a temporary supply had so bee been ineffectual. A petition, prepared by the Waimate Borough, to be presented to Parliament against the Board’s rating district, and also a counter-petition prepared by the Board’s contradicting a number of alleged therein were read. It was resolved to appoint canvassers to take the counter petition round the Waixnate district for signature, and the Chairman, was authorised to go to Wellington in the" interests of the Bill, accompanied; by the Secretary, if his health permits, and if not, by Mr Macintosh, mayor of Thnaru. A quantity of routine correspondence was read and dealt with. On the recommendation of the Standing Committee the tender of W. A. The Chairman and Mr Macintosh highly praised the practical manner in which Mr Bradley was managing the quarry work, while Mr Pringle criticised the blasting as not so efficient in loosening stone as it ought :to be. About thirty applications were received for the post of resident engineer, and they were referred to a committee to examine and report to a special meeting, on Oct. 6. To the same iieesmittee were referred tenders for supply Of timber, and the question of raising the interest offered on the loan debentures from 4 to per cent.
