The North Canterbury Rifles mustered in strong force on Wednesday evening, under Captain Cossgrova and Lieutenants Uru, Home and MTntosh. The majority of the rifles were returned, clean and in good order. Surgeon-Captain Cook gave the first of his series of ambulance lectures, which was listened to with interest. The next lecture will bo ' delivered on Wednesday evening next.' The new range and butts will soon be completed, so that practice with the; new rifles will bo gone on with as soon as ammunition is available. With the erection of another target across the lagoon, this company will have a range of 2000 yards. Field-Marshal Earl Roberts, V.C., has forwarded an autograph letter to the Christ’s College Rifles, accepting life membership, consequently . his name will head .the roil-of-honour now being prepared for members and ex-members who have volunteered for the front. His Lordship says he feels proud to accept the position, in view of the assistance rendered by New Zealand to the Mother Country. ‘ Mr Donald W. M’Lean has been appointed Lieutenant of the Ashburton Mounted Rifles, and Mr Robert G. Shearman, lieutenant, of the Ashburton 'Guards Rifle Volunteers.

Lieutenant-Colonel Slater, commanding the Canterbury (Mounted Brigade, has issued an order granting permission to officers to appear in undress or mess uniform at the forthcoming officers’ ball.
