PERSONAL.
Mr E. G. Kerr went south by yesterday morning’s express train. Mr Thomas Bacon, one of the oldest officers in the Customs department, has retired on a pension, after over forty-two years’ service. He joined on June 9, 1859, and has been stationed at Lyttelton ever since. ' He has been succeeded in office by his son, Mr A. B. Bacon. At the executive meeting of the School Committees’ Association, held on Wednesday evening,! a letter was read from the Vice-President (Mr A. E.. Lowe), resigning his position. The Executive expressed great regret at Mr Lowe’s resignation, and the Secretary was instructed to write to Mr Lowe to that effect.
His Honor Mr Justice Cooper, with Messrs S. Brown and R. Slater, members of the Court of Arbitration, arrived from Wellington by the Monowai yesterday afternoon.
Madame Belle Cole and (Mr J. Prouse came up from Dunedin by the express train yesterday as far as Ashburton. Captain Irvine left for Dunedin by the s.s. Monowai yesterday evening. The Rev W. E. Gillam and Captain Willis were passengers for Wellington by the s.s. Talune last night. The Rev S. G. Feilding, Rector of Windsox-, N.S.W., who is acting as locum tenens at St John’s Church during the Rev H. C. M. Watson’s absence, arrived by* the Monowai yesterday, and will conduct the services in that church to-morrow.
Miss Charlotte Yonge, whose estate has been valued at £12,913 gross, by her will bequeathed to her executors the copyright of “ The Daisy Chain ” in trust for sale and the proceeds of sale are to be in trust for the mission to the Melanesian Islands. She bequeathed her collections of shells and dried flowers, and her books on botany and conchology, to St Mary’s College, Winchester, but her niece, Helen Emma. Yonge, is to retain the collections during her pleasure, and to her also the testatrix bequeathed her jewellery and personal effects, the furniture of Elderiield, and her manuscripts and books. Her nephew, Alan David Yonge, who was named as a residuary legatee, died in South Africa.
