HOSPITAL BOARD.

SOUTH CANTERBURY.

■ The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Tuesday; present —Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Moore, Dean, and M’Laren. Messrs Walker and 1 Gillingham sent apologies. The Chairman reported that. since last meeting the committee had appointed Dr Logan, vice Dr Monro resigned, as locum tenons for Dr Gahi'tes, as Resident Surgeon. He regretted to have to report that the members of the honorary staff, Drs Hogg and Reid, had sent in their resignations. The monthly return showed 35 admissions to the hospital during the month, and 32 discharged. On a report by the architect on a drain and manhole complained of by Dr Reid, it was agreed to have the lid sealed down, though the architect and Dr Logan both thought it safe when unsealed. The resignations of the honorary staff were read. Dr Hogg gave no reasons for resigning. Dr Reid explained that the position of the honorary staff had been very ambiguous; they had no status, and attended merely on sufferance ; and he refused any longer to perform operations in an operating-room which, from its imperfect lighting, and insanitary position, aidds greatly to the danger of operations. He resigned with regret, after fourteen years service. The Board discussed these resignations in committee, and then postponed! decision till next month, on account of the smallness of their meeting. A few charitable aid cases were dealt with. In one case .the Board declined to pay the funeral expenses of an indigent person who 'died in the hospital, because friends of the deceased took the funeral arrangements out of the Board s hands. Accounts amounting to' £466 9s 6d were passed for payment.
