THE CITY DECORATIONS.

i TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—As a visitor to your city, and having, during the 'last few weeks, visited the other three cities .of New Zealand, T am amazed at the apparent indifference or apathy displayed in decorating your city in a manner. worthy of the occasion and your country, Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin have arches that are works of art, and worthy of-the cities they represent. These arches have taken; a number of weeks to ouild. What have you here in Christchurch? Practically nothing. t Hero ws read to-day. of holes being dug to place some poles in, and this only a few days before the visit of the Duke and Duchess. In other places these' have been erected a month back. Do >vhat you will at.this late period, it will be .impossible to approach here in Christchurch anything lit© the elaborate decorations that have been carried out in the other cities. Where is your- public spirit, that you cannot rise to the occasion? The. only thing demonstrated to the public at present, to my mind, is the apparent desire to rake in as many as possible of the almighty dollars in seating accommodation at 5s a head. The amphitheatre being erected! in the Square, wMch is being built on lines that will exclude the masses from seeing anything, and this land is supposed to belong to the people.—l am,, etc. JOHN R. ■ EATHORNE.
