ROAD BOARDS.

MANDEVHvLE AND RANGIORA. The monthly meeting of the Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board was held on June 14, all the nwmbers present. The \ clerk was instructed to insure the men employed at the stone-breaker against accident. It was resolved to offer the shed I on the gravel reserve at Ferrrside for sale fby auction. The River Board wrote agreeing to pay half cost of raising the road near Perrin's Ford. *A deputation was appointed to meet the ratepayers who are interested in the matter, and arrange as to how the Work had best be done. Applications for slaughtering licenses were received from Messrs A. Wallace, R. Watson, J. Taylor and F. Chambers, and it wa-s decided to recommend the Government to grant the same. It was decided to announce that the Board will purchase small birds' headls at sixpence per dozen. The Chief Engineer of Roads and Bridges wrote that any objection with reference to the rebuilding of White's Bridge would have to be lodged by July 2. Mr Clark was authorised to lodge an objection to the present allocation, to be withdrawn if the Government give a subsidy of pound! for pound for the construction of a more substantial bridge than that proposed by the Selwyn County Council. The clerk to the Kowai Board wrote that very extensive repairs were required to the Ashley traffic bridge on the North Road, and his Board had decided to invite tenders for the work. It was resolved—" That this Board is of opinion that it is unfair that it should be asked to pay the half cost of the maintenance of this bridge, seeing that it is considerably more used by the residents north of the river, and the Board therefore ob' jects in future to pay the half cost in connection with amy repairs that may be required." It was decided to apply to the Customs Department for a refund of the duty (£4B 12s), paid on tho stone-breaker. The clerk was instructed to invite tenders for cleaning footpaths and channels at Woodend, Southbrook and Oxford Road. Leave was granted the clerk to attend a meeting in Wellington on June 27. The receipts for the month were reported to be £74 7s lid, and the bank debit balance £336 2s lid. Accounts amounting to £IOO 19s 2d were passed for payment. RICCARTON. The ordinary meeting of the Riccarton Road Board was held on June 10; all •tlie members present. The Surveyor's report was read and approved. The question of covering in drain at Horler's was deferred for further consideration'. It was decided to clean out the side channel on "Sales Road, and construct a footbridge at its junction with Harewood Road. The Board was interviewed by Messrs Hillewell and Brown, with a petition from ratepayers at Hillmorten, asking the Board to fill up a ditch and form a footpath on the north-west side of Lincoln Road, from the Asylum gate to Wright's Road' The Board resolved to meet on the ground at 10 a.m. on Monday next to see what could be done. It was resolved to clean out channels and clear a path on Bligh's Road. The Board decided to erect a lamp at the junction of Holmwood and Boundary Roads, if the St Albans Borough Council would pay half the cost. The Selwyn County Council wrote, stating that the amount of £393 16s 10d was required for hospital and charitable aid for the current year. Accounts to the amount of £223 17s were passed 1 for payment, and the Board rose. MOU&T PEEL. . Th& -Mount Peel Road Board met on Friday, June [l4. $ only a bare quorum present. Mr G., Barfcrum wrote, asking to be allowed to erect two gates on Reid's Road. The request was granted condibionaLly. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Wilson, -Dixon and Robinson, waited on the Board, asking that the ratepayers on the Faiiiie side of the Mount Peel s road district should be included in (the Mackenzie County district. The Board, after hearing the deputation, who represented the petitioning ratepayers, recommended that the matter be left over until Parliamenit met. It was decided that a -rate of one halfpenny in the pound on all ratable property in the district should foe struck for the year. Ac-, counts amounting to £415 10s- 3d were passed, and the Board rose. . ■ RAKAIA. The Rakaia.Road Board met on June 10 ; present—all the members.Mr Buckley was elected chairman of the Board for the ensuing year. The ballot to determine the order in which members retire resulted in Messrs Buckley and Wilson being the members to retire in 1902, and Messrs Bealey, Wallace and Davies in 1903. The ordinary meetings of tbe v Board were fixed for the second Monday in each month. The Lake Coleridge Road Board wrote asking that the bridge over Macintosh's Creek should be made fit to,- carry traction engines, and offering to contribute towards the cost. It was decided to ask the Lake Coleridge Board what proportion of the cost it would bear of substituting a suitable concrete culvert for this bridge. The Selwyn County Council wrote stating that a rate of one-eighth of a penmy in the pound had been levied for hospitals and charitable aid for the current year. The. question of collecting the rate or paying the contribution required for this purpose out of the general fund, was deferred 'for consideration at a future meeting. It was decided to draw the attention of the Department of Roads to the fact that the coal traffic from a Government mine was carried over roads used mainly for that pur-, pose, and maintained out of the Board's general fund, but not in any way supported by the mine in the shape of rates.
