HOISTING THE FLAG.

THE CEREMONY AT THE NORMAL SCHOOL. There was a.large gathering of children and adults at the ceremony of hoisting the flag at the Normal School. The West Coast Cadets, who are quartered at the school, were paraded, undiar Major Richards, and .drawn up in front of this platform at the base of the flagpole. On thie platform were Messrs' T. S. Weston (Chairman of the North Canterbury Board of Education), E. Watkins, B.A. (Principal of the Normal School), 1). Buddo, M.H.R., T. W. Adams, M. Dalziel and H. W. Peryman, members! of the Board of Education. Mr T. W. Adtois said it was not for want of patriotism that the cere-, mony took place so late. A difficulty had as to a place to erect a flagpole, but they would all agree that the position in front of the school was "aptly chosen." There was no room in the playground, which was perhaps the smallest of any schoor in Christchurch. Mrs T. S. Weston then noisbed the flag to the masthead, a n d oheers were given in salute. Mr T: S. Weston expressed : the pleasure he felt, at seeing- the West Coast Cadets present, and went on to refer to the flag and the greatness of the Empire it represented, giving some history of the Transvaal war, 'and UTging the children to try to realise the full meaning of the honour of the flag. Messrs H. W. Peryman and D. Buddo,

M.H.R., also spoke. ' The ceremony concluded with cheers for the speakers, the singling.of the National Anthem, and three cheers for the Royal visitors. .
