LYTTELTON JUBILEE REGATTA

PB.ESENTATION TO THE SECRETARY AND TREASURER, The members of the committee which organised and curried out- the Lyttelton Jubilee Regatta met on Friday evening in the Borough Council Chambers for the purpose •of. spending a social evening and making a presentation to the honorary secretary, Mr G. A. Lewin, and honorary treasurer, Mr C. Ferrier. There was a good attendance, and Mr J T Brice, chairman of the committee presided. After the health of the King had been honoured the Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr T. C. Field, proposed the toast of the evening, the health of the Secretary and the Treasurer, .who, ho said, were really the mainstay of the regatta, Mr Lewin had acted as secretary for ten or eleven years, and they all knew how well he had performed his duties! Mr Ferrier had been with them as treasurer for only two years, but had done excellent work for the regattta in that time. /The toast was drunk with musical honours and hearty cheers. The Chairman then presented the Treasurer, Mr Ferrier,. with a gold chain and Maltese Cross pendant, suitably inscribed, and .said that he had had great pleasure in working with Mr Ferrier, whose work had always been most admirable. Lewin, with a valuable gold watch, bearing the inscription " Lyttelton Jubilee: Regatta, Jan. Ist and 2nd, 1901, presented by the committee to G. A. Lewin, Esq., in recognition of his services as hon secretary to Lyttelton regattas from 1890 to 1901."' Mr Laurenson remarked that Mr Lewin had been secretary of the committee for twelve years, and during that time the success of the gathering had increased greatly, largely through Mr Lewiu's exertions. He (Mr Laurenson) was convinced that the success of any organisation consisted largely in having a. good executive, officer, and that they had in Mr Lewin, and-another in Mr. Ferrier. ,He hoped that both those gentlemen, would long hold the offices they now filled so ably. He hoped that they might have long and prosperous lives, and that the times which tho watch, just presented to Mr Lewin would record would bo good times. (Applause.) The health of Messrs Lewin and'Ferrier was again enthusiastically honoured. 'Mr Lewin expressed his heartfelt -thanks for the valuable present just given to him, and remarked that- he could not fairly take to himself all the kind said of him, for he felt that the Lyttelton regatta would never have attained the success which it had achieved had it not been for an excellent working committee. He was loth to introduce anything not of a pleasant character, but he must say that at present it 'was. his decided intention to vacate his position. (No, no.) He had intended to retain it only until the Jubilee regatta was over, and now he felt that he should retire and leave to someone also the task of helping to maintain the Lyttelton regatta at its present high standard. Again, he would thank the committee for the very valuable present,' and for the good wishes of which it was the expression. He could assure them that' their kindness would ever be gratefully remembered by him. (Applause). Mr Ferrier said Ire was utterly unable to express his feelings at the kindness which had' prompted ; tho members -to give him such a valuable present. He felt that much of the credit was due to those who had worked with him, and he could assure them that he would ever look with pride upon the handsome present which'he Ind just received. (Applause).
