ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD.
$ [Per Pbess Association.] NAPIER, Fell. 12. At the General Synod to-day, Archdeacon Dudley's motion, in favour of the establishment of a. Maori girls' school at Auckland, as a memorial of the late Queen, at a cost of £IO,OOO, was carried, and a committee set up to collect subscriptions. The next meeting of the Synod, in 1904, was fixed for Auckland. • ', The repo'i'tjjOf the Committee appointed in consider the'- proposal in reference to religious teaching in schools, was the same as that already telegraphed, with the elimination of the clause asking for grants in aid to denominational and private schools. The motion fc.r the adoption of the report was lost on a division. . The voting was Ayes, bishops 4, clergy 9, laity 10; Noes, bishops 3, clergy 10,. laity 4. The Synod voted 'against the division-list being, recorded on the minutes.
Tiie special, report, of. the Committee on Missions ■ referred to the /faict that the withdrawal- of the grants, to. clergy in the Pacific Islands by the Society for .the Propagation of the Gospel- would place.the work in,a critical position. It was ; feared 1 it would mean, the withdrawal of the clergy from two-, congregations 1 in Fiji, and pro.bably, added to the action, of the American . Church would lea dto the resignation of the Bishop of Honolulu, when his supervision in >Samoa, Tonga and Fiji would ba. discontinued. In, the course of the,debate the Bishop of .Dunedin stated that Mr Shirley Baker had administered the sa'erament of the Anglican Church without license, and as that introduced a. new element, the discussion was adjourned. The question, of St John's College was. discussed, but at the rising of the Synod the only clause passed was the. one directing that the. College should' remain at. Tamaki for the present, the governors to -terminate the existing lease to Mr SmaUfield.
