AUSTRALIAN DEMONSTRATION SPORTS GATHERING. SPEECHES BY FEDERAL MINISTERS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, Feb. 12. : At the Australian Demonstration Sports gathering on Foundation. Day, the Wheel Race resulted -as follows:—Martin 1, Murphy 2, Mathias 3. Won by three lengths. Time—4min 224-ssec. Martin also won the first prize in the Gold Stakes. At the luncheon, Mr Barton, referring to the New Hebrides, said the chief source of disputes was the question of land ownership, upon which the Anglo-French agreement was silent. A Federal Ministry desired, if it could be done without embarrassing the Empire, the"creation of an international tribunal, to remove the sources of -dispute.
Sir George Turner, referring to the old age pensions, said that about fifteen thousand persons would have to be provided for, at a cost of £300,000 annually. The State would bo unable, to spend this amount, and next session a Bill would be introduced to make the pensions more limited and the administration stricter.
