NEW BRIDGE FOR COLOMBO STREET.
AN ELEGANT STRUCTURE. The City Council last evening approved a plan submitted by Mr A. D. Dobson, City Engineer, for a new bridge over the Avon, in -. Colombo . Street, and. instructed the Works Committee to call for tenders for the-work. Mr Dobson ■ stated to a "Lyttelton Times" representative that the approved design, is for a steel girder bridge, with abutments of concrete, surmounted by pillars and* parapets, with walls of Mount Somers store, the pillars being surmounted ."by ornamental lamp brackets. The floor will bo of iron bark timber, covered with'tar paving, the roadway being 34ft wide, and the footpaths : each 6ft wide. The total width, of the bridge will be 46ft/ Mr Dobson considers that iornbark floor will 1 last as long as either steel or iron plates placed in the same position, will cost less, and be very easily repaired. The structure is designed to carry the heaviest town traffic, including traction engines. The parapets to the footpaths will be of ornamental cast iron work. The design is of a. light and elegant character, and = will be a pleasing variation to the designs of the; other bridges.
