BOROUGH COUNCILS.

LINWOOD. The ordinary meeting of the Linwood Borough Council was held last evening; present—The Mayor (Mr P. H. Board), Councillors Pearce, Bean, Seed, Schumacher, Young, Taylor, Marshall and Brunt. The Mayor mentioned that the Council had now only about two months to run before the new Act came into force, and he thought the Government' should' have given them some idea of the representation they would be entitled to. The Act allowed fifteen representatives for a population of 30,000,. and provided a minimum of. six. The Government, however, could add to th'e minimum. A letter from the Sydenham Borough Council, with regard to the deposit of nightsoil at Chaney's Corner, was referred to the Sanitary Committee. The reports of the Works and Loan Committee, Finance Committee, and By-laws Committee were read and adopted. 'With regard to the widening of Cashel Street east-, the Mayor said he hardly thought the Council was in a position to meet a heavy expenditure in acquiring the necessary laud. Councillor Pearce and others wished to go on with the work at once, but eventually the matter was referred to the Finance Committee for a report. The question of widening Gloucester Street was left in the hands of the Mayor. For the.disposal of night-soil for the nexttwo years, only one'tender was received, which it was found was an increase on last year. Some Councillors thought the work could be done more cheaply by the Council itself. Eventually it was decided to call for fresh tenders. The Council then rose.
