It is estimated that twenty-two acres of land are necessary to sustain one man on fresh meat. The same space of land, if devoted to wheat-culture, would feed fortytwo people; if to oats, eighty-eight; potatoes, Indian corn and rice, 176; and if to the plantain or breadtree, over 6000 people.
