THE MATABELE RISING.
DESERTION OF, NATIVE POLICE. [Per Press Association.] CAPETOWN, March 27. The English settlements in Matabeleland are preparing for defence. Seven whites were’killed at Matoppo Hills, and four others are missing. The rest of the settlers took refuge in Laagers, and thus preserved their lives. The rising was caused by a witch doctor. A mountain patrol engaged the rebels near Buluwayo, the former losing seven men. Mr Selous is taking a strong force to punish the natives. March 28. Sir Hercules Robinson has- sent reinforcements of police to Buluwayo. Mr Rhodes is hastening to Buluwayo. Several white settlers in outlying districts have been killed and the bodies fearfully mutilated. It is now. stated that orders given for the eradication of the rinderpest excited the Matabele and caused the rising. The native police induced the rising and deserted with seven hundred rifles. Since the outbreak Captain Spreckby and Mr Selous have twice defeated the rebels with considerable loss.
