THE UNEMPLOYED.

The South Waimakariri River Board announce that they are prepared to engage a dozen men for work on their reserves. Tents', tools and firewood will be found, and the men will he selected at 2.30 p.m. to-day. Upwards of fifty men, most of whom had been among those temporarily employed to clear snow from the streets, went to the City Council Office on Saturday morning aad asked i f further employment could he found for them. One of them waited on his Worship the Mayor, who stated that he could not undertake to put on any more men on his own responsibility, but that the question of finding them employment would be considered at the meeting of the committee of the Winter Work Fund on Tuesday next. His Worship has, since the last meeting of the committee, put on 142 man at temporary work. It would appear that the knowledge that work and shelter—in the'Avon Refuge for instance—are to be found in Christchurch, has had the effect of drawing to the city some men from other districts. The other day the Mayor, encountered a poor old fellow, apparently seventy years of age, tvho had tramped all the way from Invercargill in the hope of getting employment in Christchurch.
