CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday afternoon; present— Messrs G. Humphreys (president), I, Gibbs, E. W. Roper, W. Reece, A. Kaye, W. Chrystail, R. Struthers and F. Waymouth. An apology for absence was received from Mr W. D. Mearea. The following correspondence was considered From the Auckland Chamber of Commerce as to the beat means of proceeding in harmony with other Chambers of Commerce with regard to certain anomalies in the Land and Income Tax Act, 1881. From the Dunedin Chamber covering copies of resolutions adopted. (1) Regarding the Chattels Transfer Act, 1889. After discussion it was resolved : “That, in the opinion of this Chamber all assignments of book debts should be registered under the Chattels Transfer Act, 1889.” It was decided to forward copies of the reaolution to the Hon the Minister of Justice, and to the other Chambers of Commerce throughout the colony. , (2) Regarding District Court Judges and Stipendiary Magistrates with extended jurisdiction, that they should hold their appointments during good behaviour, with salaries fixed by statute. This was agreed to. From the London Chamber of Commerce, inviting the Chamber to participate in a third Congress of Chambers of Commerce to be held in London in June next, and asking for the appointment of delegates to represent this Chamber. i A circular was received from the League for the promotion and 1 development of gold-mining, Hokitika. The report of the sub-committee on the letter received from the Dunedin Chamber regarding the Land and Income Tax Act was brought up and further considered.

A letter was received from the liquidator of the Ashburton Working Man’s Cooperative Society, pointing out the need for amendment in the Industrial and Provident Societies’ Act, 1877, which allows the withdrawal of capital. The following resolution was carried—- “ That in the opinion of this committee the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1877, should be amended in the direction of preventing the withdrawal of members’ or share capital from any Association trading under this Act,without six months’ notice to every creditor of such Association in writing.” After transacting routine business and passing accounts the meeting closed.
