A DANGEROUS LINE.
TPeb Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Mat 23. A deputation consisting of Messrs Stuckey and Bidwill, well-known Wairarapa residents, waited upon the Minister of Railways this afternoon, urging that the speed of trains on “the down grade between the Summit and Kaitoke should be reduced, as it is feared that an accident may result should the brakes at any time fail to act. The deputation pointed out that only recently, in coming down the line, the driver of a heavy train whistled for the brakes and the train ran over a mile before it was brought up. Replying to the Minister, Mr Ronayne, general manager, said that not a single accident had been recorded on that portion of the line from failure of brakes. He added that only lately the speed bad been reduced, and that there was a regulation as to speed which, if exceeded by a driver, rendered him. liable to instant dismissal. The Hon A. J. Cadman, while nob admitting that there was any danger, fully recognised that every precaution should be exercised against accidents, and he promised to give the matter due consideration.
