COUNTY COUNCILS.

LEVELS. The monthly meeting of the Levels County Council was held on Wednesday; present—Messrs Quinn (ia the chair), Pringle, King, Butler, Mee and Campbell. Some discussion took place in regard to traction engine traffic. Complaints ware made that some drivers crossed the Opihi bridge with a train of trucks close together, in disregard of tho bydaws. As the bridge is vested in the Geraldine Council, it was agreed to refer the matter to that body. A letter of advice from the Council’a solicitor regarding slaughter-house licenses and inspection fees was read, and some applications for licenses were granted. In one case of application for renewal of a license to old premises the Council at its previous meeting resolved to refuse a renewal. Tho applicant now waited on the Conucil, supported by a petition and by a medical certificate of the cleanliness of the place, to urge reconsideration, and the Inspector also reporting favourably, notice of motion was given to rescind the resolution in order to permit the license to be renewed. Commutation fees were fixed in a t number of cases, based upon the probable amount of business to be done by licensees. The Ranger reported the Scadown water-races to be in good order generally, and with a good supply of water, but growth of vegetation had made satisfactory distribution difficult. Ha reported two cases of tampering with races. On the Overseer’s report being read, certain works recommended as necessary wore ordered to stand over until next month, when the Council would determine the amount of rate to be struck for general purposes. Accounts amounting to £414 0s Gd were passed for payment. AMURI. An ordinary meeting of tho Amuri County Council was held on March 2; present—Messrs D. Rutherford (Chairman), W. Thomson, F, H. Wilson and F. S. Northcote. Leave of absence was granted to Mr Acton-Adams. The Chairman reported aa follows: Since our last meeting the following correspondence bus been received: From Mr A. Barron, Under-Secretary for Crown Lands, Wellington, stating that aa Parliament has voted no money for the Lower Widen bridge, tho Minister of Lauda ia unable to assist in its repair, and that aa the bridge is under the charge of this county he hopes that the Council will see its way to have it repaired and maintained fit for traffic. Prom the same, informing the Council that tho Secretary, Post Office, desires him to again call tho Council’s attention to the slips which have occurred on the WaiauKaikoura Road at the Conway, and that unless improvements are made, it is not likely the coach will be able to run during the coming winter. From Mr A. W. Rutherford asking that the water-tables be cleaned out, and the cutting around the Stanton Gorge, on the Waiau-Hawka-wood Road be repaired before the bad weather seta in. Prom the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Nelson, asking the Council to fill in and return a form, for the information of tho Government, giving particulars of expenditure of £4O 19b 2d received by the Council for road thirds. Prom Mr Robert Jackaon, Manager of Moleoworth, drawing the Council’s attention ,to the bad state of the road at Richmoudule and Tara dale Homesteads, and also to the impassable state of the crossings of the Saxton and Acheron Rivers, and asking the Council to have the road put in order as soon as possible. On receipt of this letter I instructed the Overseer to inapeot the road, and, if possible, to make arrangements with Mr Jackson for repairing the earns. Mr Jackson has agreed to put that portion complained of in thorough order for £5. The labour gang has been employed during the month in repairing the road from the top of Jollie’a Pass to St James’s, also from the top of Jack’s Pass to the Clarence Road ss far as, Mitchell’s Cutting. The receipts for the month have been—Dog tax £3l, rent of reserve at Rotherham £3 Ga, and publican’s conditional license fee for Caledonian sporto at Amborley ss. Tbo balance to the debit of the County Fund Account is £13015s lid, to the credit of the Water-race Account £37 Bs, and to the credit of the Government Loans to Local Bodies Account £758 la Gd.

It was resolved—“ That an engineer’s report ba procured as to the cost that would have to be incurred to put the Lower Waiau bridge in a thorough state of repair to carry traffic up to tea tons weight, for two years”; '‘That the Hawks wood Eoad bo repaired shortly after the labour gang returns from the back country”; “That duo notice be published of the Council's intention at its next ordinary meeting to be held on Saturday, April. 6, to make and levy a general rate of id in tha £,” The report of the Inspector of Works for the water-race was read and approved, and accounts amounting to J 533 15s 5d were passed for payment. At a special meeting of the Council, a special order making by-laws to regulate traction engine traffic was passed.
