ROAD BOARDS.

WAIPAEA. An ordinary meeting of the Waipara Road Board waa held on Feb. 5; present— Messrs G. D. Greenwood, James Douglas and James Little. In the absence of Mr J. D. Lance, Mr Douglas was voted to the chair. Leave of absence for three months was granted to Mr J. H. Hall. Mr T. S. Mannering attended, and^ asked the Board to allow him compensation for an extra half-acre of land the Board had obtained from him in the exchange that had taken place between himself and the Board in the matter of the road deviation on the Cheviot Eoad, near Friday’s cutting. Mr Mannering was requested to state in writing what price he wanted for thelandin question. Mrs M. James asked permission to remove a gate on the Quarry Eoad from, its present position to the junction of the Valley and Quarry Roads! It waa decided to allow Mrs James to remove the gate to a point on the Quarry Eoad, four chains Siatant from its junction with the Valley Eoad. Accounts amounting to £2BO 14a 5d were passed for payment. HALSWELL. An ordinary meeting of the Halswell Eoad Board was held on Monday; present —Messrs Gray (chairman), Rhodes, Garforth and Quaife. An apology was received for the absence of Captain Mather. Correspondence was road—From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, forwarding a circular regarding a Fair Eent Bill. Received. From the Land and Income Tax Department, stating that a voucher had been forwarded to the Treasury for the payment to the Board of the sum of £6B 13s lOd, being 75 per cent of subsidy on the rates for 1894-5. From the Tai Tapu Eoad Board, agreeing to the Board’s proposal to erect a new bridge on Dunford’s Valley Eoad. The Clerk waa instructed to draw specifications and invite tenders for the work. From the Selwyn County Council, drawing the Board’s attention to the danger of allowing Californian thistles to remain uncontrolled, and urging the importance of destroying them if on the roads of the district. Accounts amounting to £ll6 9s 2d were passed for payment, and the meeting closed. SPRINGS; An ordinary meeting of this Board waa held on Monday; all the members were present. Correspondence was read: — From the Selwyn County Council, impressing upon Eoad Boards generally the importance of destroying Californian thistles growing on roads, and asking the Board to report to the Commissioner of Crown Lands any case of such thistles growing on Crown lands. The Clerk was instructed to destroy any that may be growing on roads in the district. From the same, in reply to the Board’s request, forwarding particulars of the expenditure of the sum of £750 granted by the Government for drainage purposes. ’ From the Prebbleton poundkeeper, asking permission to impound cattle off the Lincoln boundary road. The application was granted for three, Months. From the Commissioner of , Taxes, Wellington, advising that 75 /per cant of the subsidy on rates, amounting to £6B 13s lOd, had been paid to the Board's account. Esceived. From the Assessment Court, advising that objections to the valuation list would be heard in the Board’s office at a future date. A petition was received from ten ratepayers and settlers of Greenpark, asking the Board to shingle the continuation of Carter’s Eoad across the Fiat. The Board decided to shingle about forty chains. Mr Brittan interviewed the Board with reference to the gorse case recently taken into the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court, and asked the Board to consider the advisableness of having the case re-heard. The Board decided that it could not entertain the request. Tenders were received for forming, shingling, painting, &e., and one in each case was accepted. _ The Overseer’s report was read and considered, and it was resolved to draw the Selwyn County Coanoil's attention to the lake, as it was backing up the LI Eiver and drains in its vicinity. The new valuation list was submitted to the Board, and waa approved. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the Board one week earlier than the usual date, and after accounts amounting to £34 11s had been passed, the meeting terminated. MOUNT PEEL, The adjourned meeting of this Board was held on Friday, Feb. 22; present— Hon J. B. A. Acland (chairman), Messrs 0. G. Tripp, E. Thew and R. Maokay. Correspondence was read From the Geraldine Eoad Board, giving its consent to the closing of part of Boundary Road running through Mr Tripp’s sections. Prom the Eabbit Inepaclor, Fairlie, suggesting that the lower branches, to the height of six feet, in' the Board’s plantation at Fairlie should be cub and removed. The Clerk was instructed to call for tenders for the work. Prom Mr G. J. Dennistoun, drawing the Overseer’s attention to a patch of Californian thistles growing on the road above Mr Barker’s. The Clerk reported that these thistles had been cut down, but that he did not think they were the Californian thistle, as they had no lateral roots. From the Land Board, asking for information in regard to the Fair Rent Bill. The Clerk waa directed to forward the following resolution— ,f This Board cannot particularise cases, but agrees to the principle of tho Pair Rent Bill, but would like to draw the attention of the Government to the fact that, on account of rabbits and the low prices of sheep and wool, this Board considers the rent of the runs too high.” Mr J. Talbot forwarded a circular dealing with the Californian thistle. Accounts amounting to £29 6s 9d were passed for payment.
