KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL .

The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was hold on Tuesday evening; present—The Mayor and Councillors Matthews, Hopkins, Bugg, Drabble and Blakeley. Leave of absence was granted to Councillors Weston and Doubleday, Correspondence was received:—Prom the Secretary of the Fire Brigade, announcing the appointment of Fireman John Diepenheim as Junior Inspector in place of the lats J. C. Brightinu. From Mr J. L. Wilson, acting for,. Mrs Matthews, requesting the Council to clear broom off Cam Street. Prom Councillor Whitehead, tendering his resignation as a councillor, which was accepted, and the Town Clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to fill the vacancy. The Surveyor reported the completion of the asphalting at the cemetery, and recommended' that an occupier should he requested to make good the damage done to Parnham’s drain by his cattle. The report was adopted. The finance report showed the receipts to have been .£3 3s, and the debit balance at bank to he £431 Is 9d, and recommended accounts amounting to JGSO 4a 6d for payment. The report was adopted, less payment of £3 18s for tunics for the Fire Brigade, which was referred back for explanation. It was resolved that a letter should be sent to the member for the district, asking for all particulars as to the best way of obtaining a piece of suitable land for tho purpose of settlement, and that an advertisement- should be visable, in the daily papers, inviting those desirous of obtaining sections under the Act to sign a requisition to the Government, and also to invite the members to address a public meeting on the subject. A committee consisting of the Mayor and Councillors Hopkins, Mathews and Drabble was appointed to .make inquiries on the matter. Mr Qaarder’a tender for kerosene for twelve months was accepted. Councillor Simpson obtained permission to withhold his notice of motion till a full attendance of the Council. The Council then sat as the Domain Board. The Mayor stated that he bad with other members, visited the Domain, and found that a deal of work needed attention. It was agreed to write to tho solicitor to the Municipal Councils’ Association asking his opinion as to the fencing, and to write to Mr Buddo, M.H.R., asking him to do his best to obtain a grant from Government for employment of unemployed on necessary work in the Domain. It was agreed that the committee should mark which trees should be cut down or lopped. '
